Website: www.nortonsimon.org Description: Between 1964 and 1980, art collector Norton Simon purchased more than thirty sculptures by artist Aristide Maillol (French, 1861-1944), many of which can be found in the Norton Simon Museums galleries and gardens. "Maillols Miniatures," an intimate exhibition presented at the Norton Simon Museum this spring, examines those small-scale sculptures by Maillol which are not normally on view. These works, some of them artists proofs, were used by Maillol as study pieces, and thus provide a better understanding of the artists working methods. Indeed, a number of these objects served as the impetus and inspiration for his monumental lsculptures, three of which can be seen in the Museums garden.

Website: www.nortonsimon.org Description: This year marks the 45th anniversary of Marcel Duchamps legendary retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum, now the Norton Simon Museum. Organized by Director Walter Hopps in 1963, "By or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Sélavy"the first-ever retrospective of the artists oeuvrefeatured 114 works of art, including major loans from Europe and the Philadelphia Museum of Arts Arensberg collection. Organizing an exhibition around this groundbreaking artist was a major coup for a small West Coast institution. The Museums challenge to East Coast authority was widely touted, and Hopps went on to organize a series of innovative exhibitions there. The installation "Marcel Duchamp Redux" features a dozen Duchamp works acquired by the Museum during and after the 1963 exhibition, as well as photographs and ephemera from the retrospective.

Maillol's Miniatures Over the course of his art collecting career, Norton Simon acquired close to 50 works by renowed French artist Aristide Maillol, many of which are on permanent display in the Museum's galleries and garden. The exhibition of Maillol's Miniatures offers a rare look at 15 of Maillol's small-scale sculptures that are not usually on view.

Exhibition - A Garland of Melodies: Ragamala Paintings from India and Nepal A ragamala is a pictorial illustration of a musical mode; melodies are personified as male (raga) and female (ragini) and evoke an emotion, element of devotion or mythological episode. Often accompanied by a poem that expounds on the theme, each painting is a combination of three forms of artistic expression: music, poetry and painting. The exhibition draws upon the museum's collection of ragamala paintings from India and Nepal and features 25 artworks. May 30"November 3, 2008. Wed-Mon 12 - 6, Fri 12 - 9.
