AsiaAsia restaurant at St Albans’ Old Post Office, a listed building, has rapidly become a destination restaurant for lovers of fine pan-Asian cuisine. The smart, welcoming restaurant is modern with soothing white walls, dramatic blocks of browns and cinnamons, Eastern carvings and art, leather banquettes and seating, and soft modern lighting. It’s a family owned establishment that features innovative and traditional Indian and Thai cuisine complemented by international wines. The ambience, a combination of elegant surroundings, excellent food, and attention to detail, is one of pure enjoyment, what the owners call The Asian Experience.

Mantra Japanese Restaurant Mantra is a dark and delightful little Japanese restaurant in St Albans. The blood red and fuchsia velvet walls and walnut tables give the intimate dining room an exotic and romantic atmosphere, and the food is dreamy. Delicious starters at Mantra include crispy soft shell crab with avocado and mango salad, and pan-seared scallop and squid served with spinach, chilli and coriander. The mains are dead sexy; our favourite being the pan-seared duck and foie gras served with nashi pear and yamamomo puree and sancho oil. If you’re planning a romantic meal, or you just fancy eating in a restaurant that looks a bit like an opium den, Hertfordshire’s bijou Mantra is the place for you.

BhindiYou might be used to Indian restaurants in St Albans, after all there are plenty to pick from already. But Bhindi really is a totally different prospect. With an attractive contemporary interior you can tell this is an Indian restaurant with a difference from the moment you walk through the door. Dressed in muted tones with the odd touch of bling Bhindi gets your mouth watering before you’ve even opened that menu. And what a menu it is, packed with authentic, historic Indian and Bangladeshi dishes passed down through the generations which are served with your choice of beers, wines or even a traditional Lassi.
