• Carlisle Cathedral [2] - founded in 1112.

• Carlisle Castle, Carlisle city centre, [3]. Maintained by English Heritage, Carlisle Casle was first established in 1093 by the English king William II and has guarded the border area for 900 years. Admission adult £4, children £2, concession £3

Museums and Galleries

• Tullie House Museum, Castle Street, [4]. An excellent museum dedicated to all aspects of Border life and featuring great exhibits relating to Hadrian's Wall. Admission adults £5.20, concessions £3.60, child under 16 £2.60, family £14.50, children under 5 free'.

The M6 runs just through the outskirts of Carlisle, 10 miles before the scottish border.The West Coast line from London Euston through to Glasgow stops in the City. There is a smaller railway line going West to the coastal towns of Whitehaven and Workington. The railway line running east goes through to Newcastle-upon-Tyne after running through the Tyne Valley. There is also a direct line up to Edinburgh. Carlisle has a small airport. It is currently ( 2008) under consideration for development and routine passenger flights ( mainly to London) but at the moment is more a private airport.

Strawberry Fields: Very good second hand and retro clothing store. Near the Law Courts

Bookcase: A massive second hand book store - spans four floors and a basement and has a large stock of book, both fiction anf non-fiction as well as CDs and LPs. You could spend hours in here. Staff are friendly too. Located opposite the cathedral.
