Your day in Burgundy begins with a guided tour to the medieval castle of Bazoches and its colorful history. Located on the outskirts of Vezelay, it welcomed King Philippe- Auguste and Richard the Lion heart on their way to the 3rd Crusade! The castle was bought by the Marshall of Vauban in 1675, the inventor of civil engineering. He modified the castle and installed a garrison.
The present owners are descendants of the eldest daughter of the Marshall and you can view a number of their ancestral manuscripts, treatise, furniture, coats of arms, beds, desks and libraries.
The morning ends with a visit to Vezelay, the eternal hill, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a guided tour of the basilica dedicated to Sainte Marie-Madeleine, an important example of Romanesque architecture and sculpture which still holds relics of the saint.
Free time in the village and lunch at Hotel de la Poste et du Lion d'Or (drinks not included) before an afternoon trip down the River Serein to the famous vineyards of Chablis.
Visit a cellar to sample several varieties of Chablis. The wine is light and dry and was first produced during the Roman Empire.
