This orientation tour of Iquique starts with a visit to the historic Spanish Casino (1904) built in the Moorish style and with attractive interior decoration. On returning to the Plaza Prat you will visit the Clock Tower (1877) and the Municipal Theater (1889).
Walking along Baquedano street view the former residences of the families who made their money from the nitrate boom with their Greek Revival and Georgian architecture. A few blocks from the Plaza Prat is the Regional Museum which has an interesting archeological display including some mummies from the Chinchorro culture.
Visit the Astoreca Palace, an important residence built in 1904. Today it is a Cultural Center managed by the Arturo Prat University. Continue to the Naval Museum which has a display of objects, models and maps which describe the important Naval Battle of Iquique. Also visit the fishing wharf with the brightly colored boats and lively dockside.
The tour finishes on the outskirts of town passing through the duty free zone (ZOFRI) with a visit to the monument dedicated to the sailors who died in the Naval Battle of Iquique. Return to the hotel.

This journey includes the nitrate plants, geoglyphs and the villages and oases which are located in the Pampa del Tamarugal.
Depart from Iquique towards the Pampa to arrive at the abandoned sites of the Santa Laura nitrate plant where a full visit is made of the remaining plant and there is the opportunity to discover the systems of extraction and processing of this important mineral.
A short distance away is Humberstone, the residential area for the workers of Santa Laura. Following a full visit to this fascinating abandoned town, head towards the Pampa del Tamarugal crossing an extensive wood of tamarind trees and the Salar de Pintados.
The Cerro Pintado, nearby is the home of over 400 geoglyphs made by ancient peoples on their journey from the high plateau of the Andes to the coast and depicts their way of life, maps and stories of their journeys.
Then head to the Oasis de Pica a hillside village where the existence of thermal waters has lead to the production of citrus fruits and mangos in the desert. Here lunch is served in a typical restaurant and there is the chance to bathe in the thermal pool (optional, entrance fee not included) The stop here includes a visit to the San Andrés Church.
Continue to the settlement of Matilla where the principal points of interest are the church of San Antonio with its Baroque bell tower and the 'lagar', both buildings dating back to the 18th century.
On the way back to Iquique, visit the village of La Tirana, famous for it's huge religious and folklore festival in July every year.

Depart from Iquique in the morning to visit the ruins of the Nitrate plants of Santa Laura and Humberstone. The tour includes a full visit to both in order to show the full processing of the mineral and also the lifestyle and social structure of the people who lived and worked there at the end of the 19th Century.
Continue towards the Geoglyphs of Cerro Unita, where the main interest is the 'Giant of Atacama'. The huge size of this figure - 86 meters tall (284 feet) make it the largest anthropomorphic figure in the world.
Then continue to the Geoglyphs of Pintados, an important archeological site where over 400 geoglyphs can be found on the hillside depicting messages, directions and symbols of the travelers in this area from many years ago.
