A mixture of old, new, and the many things in between can be found on this half day tour. From the mystic Mayans to the resurgence of modern Central America, a lot has happened on this piece of ground now called Belize City. More than 1,000 years of history lives here, we'll do our best to pack it all into a few hours.
This fascinating half-day tour will focus on the contrast between the ancient Maya city of Altun Ha and modern day Belize City, highlighting 1,000 years of development to this former British Colony. Altun Ha (Maya for Rock Stone Water) thrived as a trading post to the Maya World during the Post Classic and Classic periods.

Belize City today is home to about 35% of the country's population and remains the commercial capital of the country - the official capital was moved in 1971 to Belmopan in the interior.

Your tour will include historical sites such as the Redbrick St. John's Cathedral and the colonial mansion once occupied by British Governors. You will note the colonial wooden architecture of many of the houses throughout your tour.

An enjoyable 3 hour river boat cruise takes you several miles inland by way of the historic and scenic Olde Belize River. It is not unusual to encounter several troops of Black Howler Monkeys relaxing in the jungle canopy by the river bank, and look for elusive crocodiles basking in the warm sunlight. You can also see iguanas, several varieties of birds, and numerous flora.

At Burrel Boom, a quaint settlement on the river bank, you will be served a tasty local lunch with refreshments. After lunch your tour bus and guide will accompany you to the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha (Mayan for "Rock Stone Water").

You will learn the captivating history of this site where the famous jade head "Kinich Ahau" was uncovered by Dr. David Pendergast of the Royal Ontario Museum. Altun Ha was once a major trading center linking the Maya on the Caribbean with the Central American mainland Maya. It is also reputed for a variety of birdlife. An incredible array of Central America's wildlife can be found just a short scenic drive outside of Belize City. See the collection of endangered cats and primates in their natural surroundings, while supporting the zoo's efforts to protect these animals in the wild. Just 40 minutes up the Western Highway is a wonderful natural wildlife habitat - The Belize Zoo. This is home for an impressive array of Large Cats, Primates, Reptiles and Birds, giving you the opportunity of viewing Belize's prolific wildlife in one location.

Belize City today remains the commercial capital of the country and is home to about 75,000 people. View the Colonial Governor's Mansion, Redbrick St. John's Cathedral, and the Supreme Court buildings, flanked by cannons used in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798.

An adventure ATV circuit trip that will take you to discover the Maya Caves, before heading out on a hike that will allow you to explore the ancient traditions of the Maya. Your experienced guide will explain the different plants and herbs used thousands of years ago. You will then head through the tunnel of the cave system on your inner tube!

On arrival at Pecarry Park Adventure Center, your experienced guides will brief you on safety procedures for ATV handling, outline the route to be taken and issue protective gear and helmets in preparation for your ATV adventure!

Explore the jungles of Belize on trails laid out over 100 years ago by loggers in search of precious Mahogany trees. The trails are a good mix of various challenging terrain leading to the stop of the day - the Maya Caves. Here you explore caves once used by the Maya thousands of years ago. As you explore the cave, be on the look out for ancient ceramic pots forgotten for centuries.

Then head to Jaguar Paw for lunch. Your adventure continues with a 45 minute jungle hike. Your guide will point out various plants, roots and herbs once used by the Maya. At the entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system, the guide hands out flash lights and you are ready to float through the cave system in your inner tube assisted by gentle currents.

A change of clothes, shoes and towel is recommended.




Black Howler Monkey

This site has attracted international attention for its innovation in combining the needs of man with the needs of the natural habitat we live in. Exotic wildlife and a glimpse into the lives of everyday Belizeans, all in one tour.
The Community Baboon Sanctuary on the banks of the Olde Belize River is located 30 miles west of Belize City off the Northern Highway. Consisting of some 18 square miles of subsistence farms, the sanctuary exhibits the spirit of coexistence that Belizeans have with nature.

Though a grassroots effort, the villagers and landowners have committed to preserving the habitat necessary to ensure a healthy population of Black Howler Monkeys.

With assistance from the World Wildlife Fund and the Zoological Society of Milwaukee County, a small natural history museum and visitors center has been erected in Bermudian Landing, which is the most central location in the sanctuary.

Once you have crossed the causeway that divides the large lagoon, your guide will take you through the rustic village of Crooked Tree, famous for its abundance of cashew nut fruit trees. Local legend has it that the cashew was the only fruit created by the devil.

The old British colonial capital of Belize City is the country's only genuine urban area and is the commercial and cultural center of the country. The city contains both the main seaport and a colorful mix of about one-third of the country's 250,000 residents.

Take this opportunity for a fully guided tour around historic Belize City. You will see many places of interest such as the ancient swing bridge over the Haulover Creek, which is swung open by manpower. Visit the oldest Anglican Cathedral in Central America, St. John's Cathedral, built from bricks used as ballast in sailing ships of old. Directly across the street you will visit Government House, once home to the colonial Governors and now a museum known as the House of Culture.




Lamanai

Lamani... It's the Mayan term for a submerged crocodile. On this tour, many things hidden will be brought to light. The Lamani Ruins will take you back to an ancient civilization where you'll learn about life in the mysterious rain forest as you work your way to a site accessible only by water and a brief hike.
This is one of the most interesting tours in Belize. A 45-minute drive up the Northern Highway, passing through rural villages and lowlands with many bird species, brings you to Tower Hill where you board a riverboat and head up the New River. While traversing the many little creeks and lagoons, it is easy to encounter birdlife including hawks, kites and falcons.

Dainty Jacanas lightly walk on the lily pads while the elusive crocodiles bask in the morning sunlight. The river is lined with hardwood trees with lots of orchids and bromeliads. At the entrance to the New River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai (Mayan for submerged crocodile) rise into view. Once at the site you tour the small museum which features many ancient relics found at Lamanai.

You will then embark on a 1.5 mile jungle hike to visit the "Temples of the Mask", one of the tallest Mayan pyramids; the stucco mask of the Sun God "Kinich Ahau"; an elaborate carved stellae; and the "Temple of the Jaguar Masks" which all seem to materialize out of the rainforest amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of the howler monkeys.

Your guide will point out the Copal and Ramon trees, which were of great importance in ancient times. For the jungle hike you will need insect repellent and sturdy walking shoes.

At the end of the tour you will have lunch under thatched palapas near the Lagoon's edge. After lunch, time is available for more sightseeing in the rainforest. You then return to the river boat for cruise back to Tower Hill and continuation tour bus drive to Belize City.

After a scenic drive through the Farms and Villages of the Western Highway, you board your motorized canoe that will take you up the river to the Panti Maya Medicinal Trail. Along the high limestone cliffs of the Macal Branch of the Belize River, you look for parrots, toucans and iguanas, as they perch from trees along the river banks.

At the Panti Trail, your guide will point out plants and herbs still used by Belizeans for medicinal purposes. After lunch, you start your return to Belize City, with a stop at Cahal Pech Maya ruins. There you can see a small archaeological site with corbel arch rooms dating back to 1000 BC.
